Cleaning the ISV Valve?

I've heard lots of posts on here telling people to clean their ISV valve thoroughly when having problems with their CQ running roughly. I was just curious whats involved in that job? Its a 1989 90 Quattro. Sorry about all the questions, just got the car recently and i'm trying to get it running right.

I soaked and cleaned the ISV today, and the car isn't surging and is running much better through the mid RPM range. Thanks guys.
