Look above the unit. Quattro drive shaft. Carbon Fiber unit?

Default Dont be too in love with the CF driveshaft. It weighs 55% more than the steel one!

its one of the first things to go away with my new motor and 4k tranny. Damn thing is too dense/heavy for max efficiency.

Default The universal in the CF shaft doesn't need to be re-lubbed as does the steel one...

That alone makes it worthy to me. The cabon fiber one is suppose to be more robust from certain Audi wrenches tell me.

Default Incorrect; they are the same regardless. Sealed for life with no lubrication provision...

Least on B4/5 applications. I've replaced more CF drive shafts out of necessity than steel ones. So has Champagne. And replacement costs on the CF unit make it a crazy idea (like $1700 new!). The joint is NOT replaceable on the CF unit while it is on the steel tubular shaft. I had to replace the CF driveshaft on my B5 2.8 due to the U-joint going bad and they arent rebuildable. Thats when I found the HUGE weight difference between the two. Bought a later model steel unit in the junkyard for $40 and had its u-joint replaced along with the center carrier bearing. Huge difference in "off-the-line" speeds. Reduced weight by 8-9lbs which is about the same as an 8-9lb lighter flywheel.

But I'm not trying to sell ya one. Just telling my experience and what I've learned over the years.

Default My CQ has the steel one. Though I had a CF one until I rapped it with a hammer.

It is the OEM piece. Never been replaced or any of it's parts replaced. Lucky I guess.

Default hijack: your swapping a 4k tranny in? Please enlighten me....

Care to share why your swapping in the 4k tranny? I've got an '87 4000cs quattro that I picked up recently that i'm still trying to figure out what i'm gonna do with.

Default That's not a CF shaft....

...The carbon fiber part is a larger diameter and lighter in color. I have a pic of mine somewhere <reaches for laptop>.
