couple of gas tank questions....
Sometimes i can smell some gasoline fumes in the car, but not necessarily only when i fill the car up. when i do fill the car up, it seems like the tank takes forever to fill up, i.e. the automatic shutoff on the pump kicks in very often, like it takes a long time for the fuel to drain down into the tank. Im not 100% sure exactly how the vent system works, but ive got the whole rear interior torn apart, so i can access the tank/vent lines/etc. has anyone had a similar problem? or at least offer some advice on where i should look first, and specifics to look for? everything seems to be connected fine. here is a picture for reference. feel free to circle/point areas that i should adress first. tia.

I have the same problem sometimes. When I drive the car hard or sit too long in stop & go....
traffic, the smell is very evident inside the car. I am taking it to the stealership in the next couple of weeks to get it looked at. They blow smoke into your gas tank, and try to spot where it leaks/comes out. It's only about $80 to get that done. Once you know where it is, pay your bill and DIY.

I don't have an answer for your smell problem
but mine does the same thing with the fuel pump auto shutoff. It's really annoying. really annoying. Especially in the winter when i want to wash my windows and let it fill my tank at the same time, but the stupid thing keeps kicking off.
You sure the gas smell is from the back? If you take off the metal cover you can get to the fuel level sender/pump. Just look and see if it looks stained around it. I've never seen one leak. Make sure the cap on the secondary tank thingy is closed tight. Maybe the vent hose is split somewhere. Could also be your charcoal canister from up front in the engine bay. It can suck fumes in thru the heater.

Try turning the gas pump handle upside down...
This works...if the pump is upside down, the gas goes in, if it is right side up the gas pump clicks off...kinda annoying, but at least you get a full tank of gas.

the slow filling isnt my concern. the smell of gas in my car is my concern.
im just pretty confident they are related, like the tank fills slow because of some problem with the vent system.
