Default Diagnose this for me?

Hello folks,

Recently bought a 1995 Audi 90 Sport (FWD). I've been very happy with it for a 10 year old car. When I first bought it the gear shift was very smooth. But, it's not as smooth anymore especially at the start... 1st gear and the shift from 1st to 2nd. Sometimes, I need to double clutch to shift from 1st to 2nd. The rest of the gears give no problems. And no problems down-shifting either except from 2nd to 1st (again solved with double clutching). There is no grinding that I can hear or feel.

I've read a lot of informational posts here but I'm not too sure if this is a problem with synchros, fluids, the shifter or a combination of these since it's an old car. I figured it couldn't be the clutch since I don't feel any slippage but I'm no expert.

The car is pretty much stock and I don't drive it too hard.

What do you think this is?

Thanks,
Junaid

Most likley, the shift linkage needs to be rebuilt or adjustment.

Default Re:Does the clutch pedal feel normal?

It could be a warpped pressure plate. WAG

Default VW transmissions don't like to go into 1st unless you're almost sitting still....

So the 2-1 shift doesn't surprise me. As far as the 1-2 shift, check your fluid and change if it you don't know when it was last changed. Take a look at all the linkage components to see if something is worn.

Worst case scenario: what happened to me. Hole in rear transmission case for selector shaft got "egged", so shaft could rock and didn't engage gears properly. Lost 5th and reverse. Had to buy a new rear case. Sucked.

Default Re: Haven't changed fluid since I bought it...

so maybe that's what I should do first. Recommend any particular fluid? Should I go with the Mobil1?

Thanks,
Junaid

Like Just-Emre suggested you should change the fluid. I like redline fluids.

Default Re: I'll see if the fluid change fixes it for now...

but how difficult is it to rebuild or adjust the shift linkage?

Thanks,

You're the smartest on your car. Do what you think is best. I've run into a problem with allowing others to diagnose for me. They normally point out the most expensive part first. Present company excluded!
