DOT 3 instead of DOT 4

DOT 3 instead of DOT 4
I bought an 88 90Q and when I test drove it and it was fine (well it has problems, but the brakes were functional). When I went to drive it home after buying it, I ended up with a hole in the brake line. Not surprising due to the condition of the lines, but then I noticed that in the trunk, there was a bottle of DOT 3 brake fluid, so I can only guess that the fluid currently in the car is DOT 3. The car calls for DOT 4.
So my question is, could the lower grade fluid have played a factor in the line braking? And if not, is there any other damage that the fluid could cause? Thanks!

DOT 3 and DOT 4 are fully compatible. The difference is
in the heat rating. DOT 4 has a higher heat rating. If I was prepping the car to drive, I would flush and fill with DOT 4, but in an emergency, DOT 3 makes a perfectly compatible replacement. It's not likely to be responsible for your failed line.
