Guys with RS2 bumpers...take a look at this pix....

All that is is a cross member. The V6 cars have one very similar to that already.
The problem with running a heavy x-member, is that if you hit something with the nose, the frontal crush-zones in the frame rails will deform first (and more so), instead of the bumper and cross member taking the brunt. You need to dissipate impact energy, not transfer it to a major structure.
On a track car, that'd be OK as it could stiffen the front structure. Fus's car gets tracked, that's why he has it...

Re: Looks like an oil cooler to me.
I was just referring to the amount of space there is to actually put a large intercooler there. I also see the oil cooler/possible aux. rad.
