How in the eff do you read codes on a 1988 90q
I don't mean to be a stupid noob, I searched the threads on how to check codes for this model & era but it came back with nothing. I'm sure there is something here but I just need to find time to read. I checked on alldata and the description was vauge. Any help would be greatly appreciated, my check engine started flashing yesterday anytime the throttle wasn't applied, ie idling, coasting. Any ideas? I'm a former Audi owner and i'm just now getting back into the game. Thanks

ok here's how you do it...
1) get a spare fuse of any amperage like the ones in the fuse box.
2) get something to write with/on, turn the ignition on. (this is all you do for a CA car, for 49 state cars, you will have to drive it until you get the check light and stop, (DO NOT turn off the ignition or the codes will be erased), and follow the procedure from there...
3)open the hood/fusebox, find the fuel pump relay, it will be the one where (suprise) you can plug a fuse into the top.
4) plug the fuse into the top of the relay(ignition already on) and wait 4-5 seconds then pull fuse. Run around to where you can see dash. Engine check will flash on (2.5 sec) then off... then it will flash the code for the knock sensing system. If nothing is wrong it will flash 4 sets of 4 one second blinks so 4 blinks-off-4 blinks-off-4 blinks-off-4 blinks-off. it will then flash the on (2.5sec)off (2.5sec) and repeat. if you get 4444 everything is fine on the knock sensor. Insert the fuse for 4-5 seconds again and remove it like before. you will go through the same procedure with the codes but this time for the CIS ecu. Continue inserting and removing the fuse and reading the codes until it just gives you the 2.5 second on/off after removing the fuse.
5)when you get the codes, ask again and someone can tell you what they mean.

got it, 2312. Coolant temp sensor. Resistance should be: Between terminal 1 and ground -- 200 ohm Between terminal 2 and ground -- 2.5K ohm but between 2 & ground I get 175 ohms. Thanks for the tip kafer.
