Default Leaking top plug on PS pump.

I have a leak in my power steering system around the plug at the top of my power steering pump, see attached picture.

I have tried a new O-ring and all that happened was as the pump was running, the o-ring expanded, got pushed out and fluid started spraying everywhere. The one I put in appeared to be the same size as the orig. one, but is that an indication they weren't exact? I did install it again to make sure I hadn't overtightened it, but that didn't help.

I will get a rebuild kit from the dealer this week, does this O-ring come in the kit?

Any thoughts??

Default You were supposed to soak the ring in some kind of special lubricant before installation.

Then it would not have leaked. I think it is hydraulic fluid. Search on "elektro.com"

Default I never did that and I had no leaks - I think he has the wrong size o-ring.

Lubricating o-rings is a good procedure, but if it's been leaking there will be enough pentosin around the hole that it is not really necessary.

It is a metric o-ring, I had to go to two different o-ring supply houses before I found the right size.

I ordered the kit from the dealer but couldn't wait for it to come in, so I bought o-rings locally. The kit includes a new crosshead screw (not a wear item, btw) and one new o-ring for about the same price you would pay for 10,000 o-rings from any other source.

Default Some on the "S" forum would disagree with you on the new crosshead srew.

I guess changing the crosshead screw at the same time as the seal helps a lot. Ask Iskolnick about it, I think he did the same thing.

I did coat it in Pentosin before putting it in, but I did not soak it. There was good info on that link, thanks.

Default Re: Leaking top plug on PS pump.

My new plug and O-ring finaly came in and I replaced them and the problem came back. I started the car and ran it for a while in the garage and the leak seemed to have stopped.

Just as I pulled into my garage at work today, the groan returned.

Is there a valve somewhere in the system that is supposed to limit the pressure in the system?

If someone could e-mail me some pages with info about the system, perhaps a schematic that would be great.
