Magnaflow Muffler: First impressions...
So I finished my exhaust today, and started my baby up with the turbo spooling almost instantly through my 3" (from the O2 sensor back) exhaust. The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was. I was very surprised to hear how quiet this 3" straight-through muffler running without a cat was. Very impressive. Nobody who pulled up next to me at a stop light would think anything was up. But as soon as that light turns green, my car takes off with a tone that can only be described as 'Beautiful'! Not loud at all, just the sweetest sound you've ever heard. A very nice growl that sounds like it should be coming from a more sophisticated car. The M3 comes to mind. The boost gauge registers 10+ psi almost instantly when the pedal is pressed to the floor. Extremely quick! I would reccomend this muffler to anybody with a turbo Audi. I am very pleased.
I'll have pics of the system soon. I am very proud of my work, considering that I had very little welding experience prior to this project (hint: always cover your skin when welding, you'll get a VERY nasty radiation burn it you don't. I learned this the hard way :-[).
Oh, and in case anybody was wondering, the whole thing cost me about $350. Not bad for 3".

Turbo nomenclature question ....
I was in at 2 Bennet a couple of weeks ago and saw a big stack of turbo gauges. What struck me as odd was the fact that they were calibrated in inches of Hg on one side, and psi on the other.
I assume the Hg is the suction side, and psi is pressure / boost, but I was curious why they did it this way ? As an engineer, particularly from a metric speaking country (Australia) this kind of mixing of units tends to give me a headache.
Is it traditional to measure suction and pressure in different units ?
Mike.

No idea... But I would guess...
Maybe it is done for the scale. Since the maximum amount of vacuum varies greatly from the maxixmum amount of boost, they just wanted to fit it on the guage. That's just my uneducated guess.

I got it from a local muffler shop. Magnaflow's website can tell you...
where you can get their products locally to you. Non turbo engine need backpressure, 2.5" should be fine for you, nitrous or not.
