Default Yep, that's referred to as the "iron cross" thanks to Erwin Rommel's S. African desert campaign..
of course the medal is steeped in centuries-old tradition dating back to mideival times. And there were plans for a "Grand Cross" medal by Hitler to be awarded to his generals staff after the war but losing the war in 1945 kinda rained on that planned presentation ceremony parade.<ul><li><a href="http://images.google.com/images?q=iron+cross+image&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;um=1&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=images&amp;ct=title">Ir on Cross</a></li></ul>
