Should I service my 90S Auto transmission?
#11
I was lucky, I guess. Had mine serviced twice and no problems... (more)
...yet.
But I agree, the forums are full of problems like that. What I would assume: Many of the transmissions never got any service at all. Then one of us gets ahold of it and wants 'everything perfect', so the transmission gets the proper service and what 1PissedOff90 says happens!
But, for a transmission that always had the proper service, the risk should be much lower. Maybe I have been lucky, or maybe my transmission always had proper service so there was no varnish etc.
Flip a coin....

I totally agree that if a tranny has been properly or even occasionally serviced you're ok...
continuing that service. I think if the transmission has only had oil added sporadically over its life it becomes risky to "shock" it with a partial or complete drain & refill.
I also think if the fluid when pulled out on the dipstick and inspected appears brown and/or smells "acrid/burned" its better to just keep adding fluid as needed rather than attempting a partial or complete re-fill.
