Usually what happens over time the connections on the back side of the gauge develop high resistance. Then the temp gauge will start indicating low temps..could be intermittent..sometimes low and sometimes normal.

The fix is to clean the connections and install some new washers from the hardware store.

Here is an FAQ from the German Cabriolet website. Open with Chrome and do a translate to English..the repairs would be applicable to your B3 80

And you might want to rethink the 80* thermostat..87* is usually just fine.

I think the gauge is accurate cause on 80C thermostat while idling it reaches to that temperature and opens but i wonder why it cools down to 70c or whatever is the 2nd line above 50C line

I had problem with blowing off coolant from the expansion tank cause the old 87* thermostat was opening too late and i taught that the head gasket is gone and thats why i tried with lower temp thermostat. Now i dont have problem with overheating but this make me sick cause i dont have hot air from the heater in the cabin
