I think it looks good, but only if your car isn't already 'chromed up' too much.
I've got a stainless steel number plate surround on my black coupe which looks excellent.

I'm not big on chrome either. But on a silver car like in the pic it doesn't overpower. On a black car, or any darker color, it would probably come closer to looking like Rx's '54 Merc!
I like the design though. I wonder if you could pull it off with silver paint?
