what oil to use in my 20v?

with all due respect...thats crazy! TWICE A YEAR! maybe if you only drive....
the car 100 miles two times a year.
I sorta agree with you on the synth vs. dino and not really lasting longer, but many people would have MANY problems they DO NOT want if they only changed any kind of oil twice a year.
on the other hand, maybe I am too **** about my oil. Whether I am using full synth or dino, I start freaking out if more than 21/2-3months has gone by since I last changed my oil and filter! and if I had the finances to do so, then I would change them every 4 or 5 weeks. I just believe that clean oil is important for these (or any) cars.

i change my oil 4 times a year too since it's a habit but..
the fact is still that it only needs to be changed twice if you're driving an average of 25000Kms a year.
This whole myth of an oil change every 5000kms comes from garages and dealerships since obviously they want to make money.. even in books like Chilton and Haynes they might tell you that, but if you want the TRUTH, stick with your owner's manual.. that comes straight from Audi and no one knows their cars better than the people who make them themselves. Look at any other owner's manual... you'll be surprised at what you'll see.

well I certainly do not disagree with you on that. and although I do not have
an owners manual and do my own changes I still feel much more at ease if the 90 has fresh oil every 2,500- 5,000 miles (5,000 being the "stretching it" point for me).
I suppose that one could change their oil every 300 miles if they wanted to, but as long as the AUDI recommended interval is not exceeded then ideally, you should be fine. It just seems like a loooooong time to have ANY oil in an engine....but alas, I shall not let my personal opinions be pushed forth upon others. I guess an individual should simply take the time to learn his or her car and judge for themselves based upon performance and oil apperance as to when it should be changed. and certainly not go beyond the recommended intervals.

err, read Nate's post again...
He's from Maine...
And BTW, I have run 15W50 Mobil 1 in my Coupe at -28F...
Not smart, but the Coupe was a garage queen and I didn't want to change out the oil with less than 1k miles on it.

20/50 dino (castrol?) will work fine where you are living.............
10/40 for Jan / Feb. maybe but keeping with the 20/50 won't hurt you. Another good one to try would be Mobil Delvac 15/40 (Wally's World). I'm in the PNW and have run a number of 4kq's to 300+k on 20/50 dino and they were still tight when they went to the new owners. I run it now in the two I have and have run it in my B3's (20V & 10V) with good results. I run the Delvac in the A4 Avant and the motor is very clean inside but at 140k it is too young to tell how well it will be doing at 300k. Changing the oil at 3k? I'm a believer. Just talk to the lifters in the 10V motors. Right at 3k the cold start up lifter chatter starts and only goes away with fresh oil. On sale at Shucks you can pick up Castrol 20/50 for about $1 a quart. That plus under $4 for a filter and with the ease of changing the oil and filter on your 20V there really isn't any reason to not swap it out every 3000 miles. My 2 cents (or is that 2 bucks) worth.

The 'motor'
won't necessarily mind, but the rubber seals will. When they get old they get hard. They also fill in with varnish and sludge. A good synthetic (di-ester based) will act as a detergent and dissolve the varnish and you "may" develop leaks.
