Default IS your airbag light on or blinking?.... I finally fixed mine yesterday...

While removing my airbag and steering wheel last time to do the front speakers in the dashboard, I had the car in the on position while removing the airbag / steering wheel as I was listening to the radio... (some might not think thats a good idea, but OOOO well).

Since then the airbag light has been on and blinking for about 10 seconds or so everytime I start the car.. Finally I resorted to pulling the bulb out of the dash cluster.

Over the last few months I have tried again and again to diagnose the system and replace the spiral spring as a friend of mine had this recommendation from the dealer... Well I bought the one pictured below from ebay for $120 or so and have since bought like 3 used wheels.. none of which helped me.

Although the spiral spring is a common problem, this was not the case for me.

I just reset the fault codes yesterday when I dropped by a friends Shop who has a VAG Diagnosic tool.

The airbag light was reset, and has not lit up again.

I am posting this because from all the times before airbag questions have been posted, no one has had the answer for the fix.. Hope this helps guys...

If the reseting of the codes will not cure the problem, the diagnostic tool can tell you then exactly what needs to be replaced... Since most of the airbag components are pricy, (spiral spring $389 or so from the dealer) best bet is to find these items used.

Howdy! If you ever start or attempt to start the car without the instrument cluster installed the airbag light will stay on or flash on from time to time telling you a code is stored. BTDT on a Cabriolet at work a few summers ago, diagnosis a short, found clock to be shorting, removed the cluster, had to move the car into the back, drove it without the cluster, reinstalled everything and the airbag light stayed on a fair amount. So off to the dealer, reset, light gone forever.

Cheers,

Default I remove the dash to ..

I remove the dash to install larger fit speakers in the front. The eclipse speakers that I bought and installed up front needed a considerable amount of space to fit into the 4inch slots up front. The speakers were only 4inchers, but had built in crossovers on the bottom, along with a magnet just as big as the whole speaker. I used a Milwaukee Sawsall to cut the plastic and metal obstructions. Then I had to make sure they were bolted down properly. You can't do that with the dash installed even with a 3inch high phillips. If I had done this while I had my windshield out, I would have not needed to pull the dash.

Default Re: I remove the dash to ..

Howdy! I've installed 4", 3 1/2", and 100mm speakers in these dashes without yanking things. It's just the need to use the smallest phillips possible, gently and methodically slowly pushing the speaker in, twisting in the process is usually required, if they need to be removed I usually just detroy and replace, never had that problem though. The Focal's I popped in where deep, I mean like a 6 1/2" speaker, this magnet was huge. I just slowly pushed and wiggled, eventually it popped into place, really quite a hassle, but removing the dash is a bitch beyond that for sure.

How long is a while? I tried 10 minutes and the light still comes on, i.e., if 10mins was enough I probably have a fault with my system

Thanks
