$79.00 Oil change??

Here is the real answer...
The service reminder is set at the factory with a 5K interval. if not changed, the iterval stays at 5K; yeilding 10K, 15K, 20K,... reminders. After your first service, the dealer is instructed to change the interval to 10K. This would then trigger at 15k, 25k,...
I suspect, like my dealer, they forgot to change the default interval. The latest version of VAGCOM now supports the modification of the service interval and oil quality limits.
The service manual states 10K or 1 Year wichever comes first for oil and filter changes.
YES. You must use synthetic oil - Mobil 1 0w40 is recommended by Audi.

$55.00 Oil change at dealer??
Hey, where did you get $55 oil change at dealer? The two dealerships I went to charge me $100 for oil change!!! And one didn't even give me a car wash after that.

Castrol 0W-30 (Made in Germany only...not USA) meets the 502 approval and is light years better..
than the hydrocracked group III 5W-40 oil that Castrol calls "synthetic". The Castrol 5W-40 Syntec is technically NOT a true synthetic. It's a petroleum that's been tweaked...not synthetic basestock. The 0W-30 (made in Germany) Castrol is phenomenal, 100% synthetic and meets the 502 approval (along with most other Audi approvals) but it's only available at AutoZone...and not all of them.

Re: That doesn't mean anything. All Audi's I've owned had a service reminder at 10K. What I think it
In other markets Audi and others actually have two different service schedules. they recommend one to you based on your habits and usage. you can read more about it on the Audi UK website. just download any ebrochure from their site. IMO, I'd do 5K changes. cheap insurance against future problems. on my B6 1.8T I did it every 5K and never had an issue in 4 years, and lots of red hot turbo driving, if you know what I mean.

The cap "recommends" Castrol. But any synthetic that meets VW 502 is fine. However...
some oils are better than others. Mobil 1 0W-40, for example, has been shown to shear down to a 30 weight. The Castrol 5W-40 that you can get in the USA is really not synthetic. It is a group 3 hydrocracked mineral oil. Not a synthetic basestock. In europe that oil cannot be sold as 100% synthetic. Mobil sued Castrol and lost so Mobil 1 has supposedly gotten liberal in their definition of synthetic, too. Castrol used to sell a Belgian 5W-40 that was pretty good. It was available at Autozone. It was way better than the USA made 5W-40. If your Autozone has Castrol 0W-30 that says "made in Germany" in red on the back of the label than that is the very best Castrol that you can put in your car here in the states. Use that. If not, you can get away with the 5W-40 Syntec. But I've ordered Elf NF (formerly LDX) 5W-40 online at a price about what you would pay for Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol 0W-30 (not including the shipping) and I'll be using that. The Elf synthetic is probably about the best oil you can get here in the states for the Audi engine. Some people were all into Motul E-Tech 0W-40 because it was Ester based, which is great for high heat applications like the 2.0T turbo engine but Motul discontinued it due to shearing problems that were discovered. The Elf is way more oil than you even need and I'll stick with that for the 2.0T.
