cyclical gearbox drumming noise
A3 Sport 1.8 TFSI S-tronic. Bought new Jan 2013. 43000 miles July 2017. Developed cyclic drumming noise above 70 mph. 1 to 1.5 second period. Sounds like gearbox thrashing. Serviced with main agent. Can this be Audi standards? Agent "looking at it".

I Had it into a local dealership a few weeks ago and they acknowledged the noise but basically refused to help me under warranty because the rear bumper had been repainted indicating to them that "some damage may have occurred as a result of an accident". A complete cop-out into looking into the problem. Needless to say, not going back there and am looking to educate myself on the problem before stepping foot in another dealership for service.

My 2015 A3 Presitge 2.0 TFSI S-tronic is doing the same thing. 32,000 miles. I hit 70 MPH and that drumming noise pops up. I can somewhat feel/hear the noise at lower speeds but at 70 it is instantly very audible. Would love to know if you've been able to narrow down the source? Was suspecting gearbox as well.

The car is in with the dealer again for another look (the 3rd). He acknowledges that there is a problem and I will notify you of the eventual verdict. I am at least gratified that he accepts this should not be expected at this mileage (and yours is at 32000 miles!) I am guessing it's gearbox threshing having had a career in military aircraft development and heard similar noises. My email>eaglesnest3@sky.com
