Default DIY oil change

Im planning on taking my A3 3.2 across country from DC to new mexico over the christmas holiday. Ill turn 20,000 miles once i reach my destination and will need to change the oil. ( i like to change every 5K). I was wondering how difficult it is to do myself. Ive changed the oil in lots of cars but never my audi. rather than waste a vacation day at the dealership i woant to do it in my inlaws driveway. Do i need any special tools? Where can i buy a filter? What is the level of difficulty with this job? where is the oil filter located?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Default I bought my filter at the dealer, but I'm sure ECS Tuning sells them.

You'll need a huge socket for the filter housing. I think it's 36mm. I ended up with a 1-7/16" socket (which is close enough) and a 1/2" female by 3/4" male adapter, because a socket that big is 3/4" drive.

Pic of the action, since this is an excuse to gratuitously show off my lift:

Scroll down to Engine:Oil Filter.</a></

Thanks! Do you think i can do it without a lift? Where is the drain plug and fliter located? are they both under the engine?

Default Pretty far forward. I'm thinking you'll need ramps to get at all the fasteners for the belly pan.

Also, I think the drain plug requires an allen socket/wrench.

Default That drain plug valve is sweet but....

What about long term? Normally you'd replace the compression washer to reseal it and your dealing with high heat. Are you getting any leaks?

Also, looks like you got the one with the nipple, (I've got an 08 2.0FSI) do you have enough clearance with it?

Default Len, might want to note that the adapter isn't required for the 3.2s

on that note, I have a spare adapter sitting around b/c they never got back to me regarding a refund...anyone?!?!
