Videos: Taking on Ortega Hwy with the A3 3.2.
A few days ago, I happened upon instructions to build a headrest mount for a camera. Today, I tried it out.
It was a perfect summer day. In the 80s, and a little breeze. Ortega Hwy (or Hwy 74) is only a few miles away from home, so that was a perfect destination. It leads through a rocky hilly forest area down to Lake Elsinore. The first half is very busy with residents on the road, after that, it gets better. Like so often, lots of trailer trucks on the road, and one long, long bottleneck with road work. That part was about half way, so all I had to do was let everybody pass who made it through with the last batch, wait until I see the next batch coming behind me, and then go! This way, I had open road for a while until I reached the last one of the previous batch. You'll see.
At some point, you will see Lake Elsinore showing up, and I turned around before getting into that town. That's when you also see a paraglider who was just about to land when I passed him. The thump thump thump you hear on and off are little indentations for road markers. Sounds really bad, is harmless.
Keep in mind that I am not very familiar with this road. I have driven it once before with this car and maybe twice before that in 8 years. On the way back, I decided to turn on the navigation system, and I found I could look around the big rocks to see how the road is turning. I decided, however, not to trust it 100%, and I noticed it takes some getting used to translating the information on the screen into actual radiuses on the road. It is a handy tool, though, once confirmed that it is correct.
Top speeds were a bit over the limit and within reason for the road conditions and considering that I'm used to flying the Autobahn.
Turn the speakers on!<ul><li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ-D-srnaj0">Warming up</a></li></ul>

Re: Videos: Taking on Ortega Hwy with the A3 3.2.
i live on the other end of the 74 (south orange county) and have been looking for some good driving roads, but Lake Elsinore is on the other end of the 74, about 30 miles or so away i think.
how far inland do i have to go on the 74 before i hit some good driving spots like that without having to go all the way down? thanks.

Fifteen? I think it starts getting interesting about half way
and, honestly, once you're getting half way, you don't want this to end. All of a sudden, you're at the lake and it is over. I wished it were three times as long. BTW, I live in south OC too--Laguna Hills.
