why is my A3 burning through oil?
My 2007 A3 2.0L is burning through about a quart of synthetic oil every 1,000 miles. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening. I am putting Mobil 1 5w-30 in it. Please help!

Well, to start with, that oil doesn't meet the engine mfr's requirements. Switch to one of the xW-40 502.00 compliant oils.
Do you know how many miles on the car. Are U the original owner?
Welcome aboard, A!

The Mobil1 5W30 is probably on the thinner end of the spectrum, while the German mfrs tend to favor "thicker" oils and set a specific measurement for that parameter. They recommend a 5W40 (meeting 502.00 spec) when available. See Owner's Manual for additional references.
Some cars will have high oil consumption when they suffer a "soft" break in. The rings never end up seating as intended. There is a TSB on evaluating oil consumption. Sounds like your case is an extreme.

Simple. It's because your engine was not properly broken-in and your piston rings never seated for a proper seal.

Piston Rings I Bet
I have an '08 with 22k on the odometer and the car burning through oil at a slower rate than yours, but still too much. Dealer replaced rings, all better.

The Marietta, GA dealership (excellent dealership) told me yesterday that Audi is saying that burning a quart of oil at 1,000 miles or below is an issue. Anything above that is "normal". The tech told me that this is a very common problem. I have to put in a quart every 1,500 miles or so. Another blemish my perception of Audi quality. This is our third and probably not final Audi, but...
