Default Cam Actuator Failure

Hi. I have a 2018 TTRS. It has 12k miles on it. It is stock and has never has been chipped.

My car experienced a sudden onset of severe lack of power while driving on Saturday. A flashing check engine light and a Drive system: malfunction! warnings appeared on the screen. A loud knocking sound was also heard from the engine compartment.

I had the car flat bedded to the dealer. My service advisor told me that the cam actuator had come loose. The actuator had been partially destroyed by interacting with the moving valve train.

A new actuator was ordered and will arrive soon. The dealer’s technicians are following a procedure protocol in conjunction with Audi technical services. They plan to install the actuator, flush the oil, and perform a boroscopic exam to look for damage.

My concern is that particles from the damaged actuator have circulated throughout the engine and may have already damaged a bearing or blocked an oil passage among the possible outcomes.

Is anyone else aware of this issue?

I’ll report back when I get an update.

Thanks.

Yes, my 2019 TTRS is in the shop right now because the CAM Actuator got messed up somehow. Same symptoms as you mentioned. It's covered under warranty and I have a loaner, but I'd rather have the TTRS. It's a great car, but I have only 14,000 miles on it and something like this should not happen. I just hope they do the right job. I'll report in after I get it back. Good luck with yours!

The oil filter housing is designed to catch metal shavings down to a certain size. You may want to ask the dealer to give you an oil and filter change once the repair is complete. You could also perform another change after a couple thousand miles just to be safe. While changing the filter, use a flash light to look at the filter and housing area and make sure there is no metal shavings. Luckily, you have some remaining warranty so Audi should cover any issues that could arise down the road.
