Default Competitor Info: Infiniti G37 + BMW 335i (Good/Bad?)

Here is the Edmunds firtst drive of the G37. It has a 330 hp 3.7 liter V6 with 270 lb-ft of torque. It has the BMW like seamless variable valve timing. (No butterfly required, only there for emission reasons) It doesn't look nearly as great as last year's concept. Actually, looks very much like the new Nissan Altima coupe. They also said it didn't feel as fast as the 335i (or maybe some other mag said so) But the killer is that the BMW 335i overheated after 4 laps of hard press driving in Arizona. It went into limp mode. Take all of this as you see fit.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=120061?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..2 .*</a

Default Has Infiniti/Nissan improved their interior quality any over the last few years?

It's been probably 3 years since I sat in a g35, and the interior quality at the time made me not bother driving it. The interior does look slightly improved from an appearance stand point, although some of the layout choices still seem questionable.

The exterior changes I like. The g35 was always a fairly attractive car to me, though not quite something I could see myself in.

If they can improve their interior quality, I could see them being somewhat competitive with the 3 series. There are always going to be people who are all about German cars or all about Japanese cars, but I could see the close performance and cheaper price (assuming it stays close to where the outgoing version is) swaying folks on the fence.

Just looking at pictures of the two, the g37 looks nicer than the 335 inside and out to me, but I've always thought the Banglized BMWs looked a bit off. The newer BMW interiors look like they took a HUGE step back from prior years, but they are probably still worlds ahead of Infiniti/Nissan in terms of quality.

Default Limited pics but exterior G37 bit down from G35 (IMO) and still 5sp Auto?

I've always liked exterior of G35, especially in black. These pics show a bit of a "bloated" look to the new model, thickening front half, etc. I've read of the heating issue before on the 335 so I don't think the model they tested was a fluk--surely BMW will correct? Looks like they are also responding to drivetrain issues for the manual--correcting some vibration issues.

Why does Nissan stay with 5sp auto? Given the higher RPM needs of the Q37 versus large torque band available with turbos I would think they would see the advantage of more gears.

A5/S5 still dominates in looks department--by a large margin, and especially given these pics for the G37. However, price differences will be substantial. If they really have bumped the interior up (ala M series) they will have some nice options with wood/metal/leather combos, instrument layouts and sound sytem options. Interesting tests coming with 335, Q37 and A5/S5.

Remember, there are still some very interesting rumors out there that there will be an engine upgrade option for the G37--potential big competition for S5 and M3.

Hopefully both of those cars make Audi get on track with a 300+HP V6.

Default Doesn't 330HP and 270 torque usually necessitate keeping engine at high RPM

I would like to see torque band for Q37. Seems power is coming at high RPM making for potentially noisy performance. Nothing like the low end grunt from turbos with peak rpm available at under 2000 rpm.

Interesting to see what 0-60, passing in highest gear, etc. performance specs reveal on all these cars. HP figures alone don't always tell the story.

Default it'll be interesting to be an S5 owner

the day you run into either of those cars in the real world. it'll be neck and neck for sure. at least until the triple digits.

does anyone yet know the weight of the S5?
