It is a mechanical device and it is not played through the sound system speakers. There is diaphragm at the base of the windshield that vibrates in conjunction with the engine note to enhance the sound. You'll see it behind the brake fluid reservoir.
You can code it to 0% with VCDS or similar if you want to shut it off completely. If you put the engine sound in comfort as part of drive select, it will lower the volume of the Soundaktor.
