So removing swirl marks is considered paint correction? Sorry but I am very much a rookie when it comes to this level of care of a car. I always though paint correcting is when you had some sort of work done and they had to match the paint with the original. I would think swirl marks could be removed with a good wash, clay bar and a waxing.

Essentially, you want your paint to look flawless prior to coating, and paint correction is kind of a general term for doing whatever is required to take what you have, and make it perfect. If there are any paint chips, they get fixed with the best method. Swirl marks, fix them with the best method, etc.

Thanks! I was very happy with my experience with the shop. I had a million questions along the way and all of the personnel were so helpful in answering them and making sure I understood the merits of each option.

It's typically done the other way around - film, then coating. I suspect that it's to give the film something to grab onto, but I don't know the science behind it. I've found that ceramic coating (Opticoat Pro Plus in my case) has made my car a lot easier to wash compared to my previous cars, and I have yet to see any evidence of swirls after 7 months of weekly washing. I'm a believer.

Where/how do you do your weekly washes? I way overloaded on YouTube videos and message boards on car detailing before I picked up the car and have only been doing hand washes with a rinseless product but I’ll need to figure out something for winter. I’m fearful of machine washes.

And what you said is color matching. Not paint correction
And nope. Swirls can be induced by improper wash methods. The only way to get rid of them is to compound and polish which is done by cutting the clear coat. Cutting takes off a few microns of clear coat to get rid of swirls and make it perfect again.

Winters in IL are horrible and make it impossible for me to hand wash my cars. I take my cars to a touchless car wash then. There’s nothing else I can do since I don’t like washing my cars in my garage and also since it isn’t a heated garage.
