'02 v. '01 Steering
I have an '02 as a loaner today while my '01 is in for service. (This is the third time I received an allroad as a loaner in 6 service visits--also received A6 avant, A4 avant and once a Lincoln rental). I noticed the steering feels tighter in the '02. Does anyone know if this is in fact the case, and if so, can any adjustments be made to make the '01 steering tighter? Also, I like the "S" mode in the new tip transmission--very responsive for an automatic.

These years had different power steering boost levels...
...which is talked about here and on the A6 forum as "605" and "628" relays. The '01s have a relay under the dash labeled "605" that boosts the power steering significantly, making it lighter -- many of us have pulled that relay.
In '02, Audi put in less boost, via the "628" relay, which some people have pulled and some people have used in their '01 models to replace the 605. I (and others) like the 605 out completely. (It was an option in Europe.)
Did you notice in your '02 loaner whether the S mode shifted through all five gears automatically? Or did it behave like the '01 "4" mode and just use the low four gears? TIA

Is pulling the 605 something I, with little mechanical knowledge/ability, can do myself or should I have the dealer do it?
I did not notice for sure whether the S mode goes up to 5th but I think it does not. It also seems like it keeps you in gear while you are coasting, so there is no delay when you hit the gas again to get the revs back up. Regular automatic often feels like it goes into neutral when you coast.

2003 AR's "S" mode definitely goes to 5th gear
I test drove the AR for 300 miles using "S" mode and it does shift to 5th gear even at 50mph if you don't floor the accelerate.
But if you push much pressure on the pedal, it may not shift to 5th until after 80mph ...
The 2003 "S" mode is just a beast! No need for a tip chip at all. (I still get 18.5 mpg with the S mode)
