Default 120 km/h (75 mph) shake solved! (don't know why though...)

I'd been plagued by this "wobble" for a couple of years. In the end I just got used to it.

Last week I had my double-spoke wheeles re-finished (to remove 5 years of curb rash). The wheels came back absolutely pristine, and I do mean exactly like new.

Took the car out onto the motorway and... wallah! Wobble at 120km/h gone. Car totally smooth at all speeds.

Now, I know that the shop took the double-spokes apart and refinished/painted both pieces. It may be that there was gunk between the spokes that was causing the problem, but I doubt it as it was persistent problem even after re-balancing (which I do every 10,000 km along with alignment). It may be that it was due to the chunks I'd removed from the wheels on crubs throughout Europe.

I'm just happy it has gone. But not knowing the cause makes me nervous...

Default Re: 75 mph shake solved! Refinished dual spoke wheels.

I purchased my '02 ar tip in November of '05. I have experienced that 75 mph shutter also. New tires did not solve the problem.

My wheels were scuffed from the previous owner.

This weekend, I refinished the stock 17" dual spoke wheels. Basically, I removed the outer spokes (20 ti bolts each) to sand and re-spray them. I did drive the car about 30 miles on Friday without the spokes mounted. No more shutter at 75 mph! Crazy.

On Saturday, I bolted on my refinished spokes and still no shutter. Cool! What happened?

Well, when I removed the outer spoke, I noticed that grime and dirt were between the rim and the outer spoke where they bolted together. However, this was only in certain areas of the rim. Also, it appeared to me that there was some evidence of movement, as sand grains had been embedded in the alloy rim where the spoke should have been bolted snug (pressed) to the rim. It is as if the spokes were not mounted correctly. It appeared that they were not attached in a criss-crossed manner. Some were tightened against the rim, others were not. The blue loctite held the ti bolts in place with a gap behind the spoke.

On the refinished spokes, I tightened the bolts diagonally across the bolt circle to ensure a tight fit. No high speed wobble.

Default some claim torque makes a difference

I had my tires replaced and I asked the shop to torque the wheels to the recomended spec here (forget that the value was) and my wobble went away. This may have had a contributing factor as your wheels were reinstalled.
