You're right (again). The gearing in the AR is much too short, especially for the 6-speed. Instead of having five normal gears and a big tall top gear for cruising, what they have done is to cram the 6 gears into the same ratio spread as the 5-speed in my A4. If anything, 1st gear is slightly lower. As a result, it's 3000 rpm in top at around 70 mph. Ridiculous!

What makes it even sillier is that with my Low Range model, the High Range ratios don't seem to be changed. So even though I have some super-low gears to choose from, I've got another six overly-low gears in High Range.

More bad design?

I made some enquiries from a company who sell tall gears for Audis and while they've got a gear that IIRC knocks about 15 per cent off the revs in 6th, only saves around 2-3 per cent in fuel economy. It would never pay for itself

Default I average 24 mpgs

I have been tracking my mileage for about 6 months and it is around 24 mpgs. 2003, 2.7t with the six-speed. The trick is slower acceleration (except when really needed) and hardly ever using the brakes. Takes a fair amount of anticipation. I really like the car but the transmission is more difficult to shift and the ratios are not designed for the real world. Am thinking of trading it for something a bit smaller and more fuel efficient.

I have a allroad 2.7T On my commute I have about a 220km round trip Set off country then onto major hwy then stop and go major hwy (Toronto) I am turning 10Ltr pr 100Km, Not bad I thought. Now if you want to drive it and have fun I don't want to know how much fuel it can cram down its neck.
You can have quick and economy But you cant have them both at the same time

I think i'm averaging the high teens on my 4.2AR, to tell the truth i love this car and the way it drives, the comfort the performance, just about everything, the MPG is such a small price to pay for such a great car.
