Default 2013 allroad vs 2013 Q5 vs 2014 Q5 vs 2014 Q3...?

Hi all,

I've become neurotic trying to decide to buy the new allroad now... and I'm not convinced its worth the premium over the 2012 Avant. However, what I'm starting to doubt if now is the right time to buy anything. I'm a 3x previous owner, and love the brand. But what do you think the best choice is between buying:

1. 2013 allroad
2. 2013 Q5
...or waiting a year for the:
3. 2014 TDI Q5
4. 2014 Q3

The allroad I've priced out is Prestige + sport package (factory order) + dark brown inlay. While I love Audi, you guys are clearly more informed by the technical side of things, perhaps the side I am missing in my decision making. Any thoughts, pros/ cons on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

I love my allroad... don't get me wrong... but the 3.0TDI in the Q5 is a very compelling reason to wait. That engine, in my opinion, is probably the best all around engine on the road. Great power, incredibly smooth, impressive fuel economy.

If they put that in the allroad here in the U.S..... that would be the complete package for me.

^Agreed.

I would do anything for a new allroad with the TDI engine, a manual transmission, and a new adjustable air suspension. Of those three things though, I think the TDI tops the list. My father owns a Q7 with the 3.0TDI and it's got power in any gear that you wouldn't think possible in an SUV that size. Plus the fuel economy is icing on the cake. It would be a fantastic engine in the Q5. If it were me (and if I had even just a hint of patience), I would wait for a 2014 Q5 TDI.

Now if any of those cars you listed came with a manual transmission, that would sway my decision a lot too. Perhaps it's a good thing they don't right now.

I pulled the trigger, and bought the 2013 allroad prestige... Phantom black, black interior, walnut inlay, sport package, splash guards. Because of the sport seats, I had to order from the factory as none were available locally with these same options.

Since I'm waiting a few months for delivery, is there a list for special orders, such as custom paint job, different wheels, etc., or is there nothing 'formal' about these examples of special orders?

Congratulations on the new AR. Let me ask you this though, did it go through your mind(And at this point, I don't even know if you purchased or leased)to lease the new AR, and trade up for the TDi Q5 when it becomes available?

Yes, it actually did. As I had to order it from the factory, the dealer said I can decide whether or not to buy (cash or finance) or lease later in three month window. I think about it a lot; my concern is that I'm guessing the TDI Prem Plus or Prestige will be in the $55-65k range, which is more expensive than what I paid for the allroad. Plus, The allroad has almost as much cargo space as the Q5. I'm more inclined to lease and wait 2-3 yrs for the Q3 and hope that comes ashore with TDI.

Congrats on the purchase. The hardest part of it now will be waiting for it. I really do love my AR!

Thanks; yes the hardest part is waiting... three months! Is that the normal/ average wait time??

Also, which interior is the winner here on a Phantom Black exterior, black sport seats or chestnut brown interior??

Congrats on the new ride! I have an Ibis White allroad that I ordered from the factory as well. It's a painful wait but well worth it. I placed the order on 6/17 and picked it up on 9/9 (almost three months. Here is the breakdown i got from Audi during my waiting period. Fortunately, I had a great sales person and he was happy to give me the info from time to time. I must've sent 20 emails while I waited for delivery. (see my comments after the stats for more details)

Order Entry 06/17/2012
Dealer Invoice Vehicle Assigned 06/17/2012
Release to Manuf. 06/18/2012
Marked Sold Order 06/27/2012
Release for Production 07/20/2012
Factory Inspected 08/02/2012
Departure Port Arrived 08/03/2012
Ship Loaded 08/06/2012
Rel. to Carrier (Port) 09/11/2012
Port Arrived 09/05/2012
Dealer Delivered Week of 09/10/2012

I live in San Diego so I am in a port city and didn't have to use the rail. I tracked the Ship from Bremmerhaven to San Diego and saw all of it's stops. The travel time from Germany to San Diego was almost exactly a month. If you're on the east coast, you have a more direct path but a lot of stops along the way. Crossing the panama canal was about a week as well. As you can see, I got really bored of waiting.

The key is the date that Audi releases it to production since the factory floor is kind of shared. I got lucky and they fit the production of my AR right in with the others but I guess that date can get delayed.

P.S. I got the Chestnut Brown Interior as a gamble and I totally love it. Since I tinted my windows, its nice to have the brown to contrast the black interior and dark windows. It very unique and you'll love it.

I ordered mine on April 15th and took delivery on August 29th. Ugh! Well worth the wait there.

I LOVE the Chestnut Brown interior, but my wife hated it... so I went with black. To offset that... I chose the layered oak inlays which really set everything off nicely.

If I ultimately had the say... I'd have done the Chestnut Brown.
