Default allroad tip post 100,000 miles

What is the reliability of the tip transmission post 100,000 miles? I'm aware of the torque converter failure that normally occurs before 100K. Do you guys believe if the tip trans is maintained as it should be that it is a reliable unit? I'm looking at an '02 AR with 100,000. I have not run a vehicle history report. The owner claims transmission has been maintained per Audis maintenance schedule. The owner is not aware of any repairs to the transmission. Thanks for the help.

Reverse can go out, but otherwise they seem reliable. They should be serviced (fluid and filter) @ regular intervals, otherwise a fine metal sludge will build up and eventually contaminate the passageways.

Only "service" specified for Audi on tips is to "check for leaks" every 20K miles and "check interlock" function. The latter can be repaired or adjusted if it is not interlocking.

If they find leaks, who knows what the repairs would be--most likely R&R of the assembly for lots a bucks.

Yes, Audi states that the transmission fluid is lifetime, but that's simply a marketing tool for new car buyers. The Audi ATF fluid is synthetic and will last a long time, however the fluid and filter should still be changed, and the pan should be meticulously cleaned of debris. Most independent shops recommend service @ 60k or 90k miles -I change mine every 60k. Leaks are typically only from the pan or electrical connector plug (both replaced when serviced).

My first VW, '82 Scirocco. I believe it said in the owners manual that the hypoid trans oil did not need to be filled. That's one bit of direction from VW I didn't follow.

Yep, its the torque converters on autos that are susceptible to failure.

Being pro-active with changing the tranny fluid is def. a good idea.

160K on my 6 speed btw. Great cars !

Ah yes, the torque converter seal -I've seen that fail many a time on the allroad, and it's an expensive repair.

First our ar has gone almost 200k and never had a problem or any kind os service done to it. (we have since sold it and the new owners are still logging miles)

I will admit that we noitced a lag (if you will) in the time it took to shift from drive to reverse, and so we were alway patiant with it. I think that too many owner just dont wait for it to complet the shift and that causes an abrupt hit when it complets the move.

Advice, take your time going from Drive to Reverse.

Mark.
B7 S4 replaced the ar.(the wifes car).

I noticed that slight lag on my 2001 shifting to reverse as well but I just take my time and all is good.
