Default Anybody have an alternator failure?

I've got the front end open at the INDY and I was looking at the alternator and wondering just how long these things last before failure.
Being the **** SOB tha I am I just hate riping something open again because I missed something the first time.

Well I'm glad I pulled the trigger this am on the rebuild.
After opening it the brushes were less than 25% remaining and I have 100K on it so rebuild it was.
I fact it is already back and probably installed by now.
Only problem now is guess what's behind the alternator? THE STARTER

MIne didn't make it to 70k miles. Failed last night at 68,688 miles. Stranded me at night on the road 70 miles from home. Any recommendations of other work I should consider doing while the dealer does the alternator replacement?

Don't worry about the starter, it doesn't run all the time like the alternator does........good call on the alternator tho.....

Mine Just went too (at 167000km). I'm in Sydney and can't find anyone local to rewind/recon the one I have. And the mechanic can't find an alternative to the factory Audi part ($1600 for the part)!

Does anyone know of an aftermarket part# that I can order online? (or happen to know someone in Australia that can recondition the one I have?

Thanks
Mark

Default alternators

most 2.7 engine alternators at about 100k miles but seen as early as 55k
4.2 are worst and a lot more expensive

Anybody know which of these two alternators would suit a 2001 Allroad (2.7TT)?

Part#: AL0803X Bosch (OE Reman) Alternator; 120 Amp
For models with Valeo alternator. Please verify Audi/VW part number on existing unit prior to ordering. 1 per car.

Part#: 078903016H Valeo OEM Alternator; 120 Amp; New
For models equipped with Valeo alternator from factory.
