Please tell me why... never had a LandRover
need third car in August. Choices include Freelander, Audi assured S4, new A4 1.8T, other like vehicles. Ideas? Used for local commuting in snowbelt for me wife.

Huh? Freelander and (used) S4 or A4 1.8T...
...are apples and oranges, or even not that close. Apples and, say, rutabagas.
Freelander is kind of a neat little vehicle--it looks to me like a high-end Rav4 or luxury Forester or something. But if you drive one and then drive an S4, well, you'll see there's no comparison for things like commuting.

My cousin had a Range Rover 4.0 HSE, Three words.....
Piece of ****! Gorgeuos truck, lottsa bells & whistles, but unreliable as hell. Could you imagine leaving your $55k+ SUV in your driveway and renting a Ford Expedition to go on vacation, because you're afraid of breaking down? I considered a Discovery when I was shopping, He talked me out of it in about two seconds. Get the 300 h.p. Subaru WRX.

Two RR, 400+k between the two, avag. $150.00 a month in maint
this was over 10 years, It just took a little time to set in. But the service was great untill Ford took over, then my Mech. (Great Guy) Told me that they could not work on veh. with over 100k.??? If you are think of the Freelander look at the domestic side Ford Escape.

Don't go there, you've been warned, but......
The Landrover people are really nice.
I even visited their factory at Solihull, England.
I even bought one of their vehicles, brand spanking new!
But for some darned reason, they just can't get the mechanicals right.
Vehicles are beautifully built, well finished, but just unreliable.
If you really want a Landrover, go for one with a BMW engine in it.
I know the Freelander diesel is sourced from BMW and is a good sound engine.
Range Rover has a V8 from BMW also.
The original V8 was an old Buick design,
nearly as old as me, and VERY thirsty.
