Audi Allroad vs. Volvo XC70
Ok, as XC70 was mentioned in a recent thread I thought it would be worthy of its own thread comparing the 2, anyone have any actual experiences with the Volvo XC70

I looked at both...
These were the two cars I considered earlier this year before buying my allroad. I thought the XC70 was very nice and would have been a good choice. Ultimately, I went with the allroad for the following reasons 1) AWD 2) more power 3) Audi interior quality/amenities and the ability to swap in my RNS-E 4) If I wasn't going to buy an Audi, I figured I ought to buy a car known for its reliability and Volvo's don't have any better record in reliability and in some cases are worse. 5) I've had Audis and know Audis and enjoy the Audi community
The advantages I saw on the Volvo were that 1) I thought the seats were extremely comfortable 2) apples the apples the XC70 was cheaper 3) better gas mileage 4) That was about it.
But, ultimately, I decided to buy something I wouldn't have any regrets about and would be happy with even if it meant paying a few more bucks.

XC70 doesn't compare. I drive them both weekly servicing Volvo's for my customers.
If you want a Swedish Ford go ahead. No VAG and everything you buy needs a download. This is the truth if you buy window switch for a new Volvo it doesn't work until it gets a download from Volvo. They are doing everything they can to cut the independent out of the service industry.

If you are looking at the same age vehicles the allroad wins.
However Volvo still imports the XC and Audi has forsaken the allroad in the US market. So there is an advantage there.
My brother has a Cross Country and an A6 and even after chipping his CC and adding an exhaust still likes my allroad better. And he has over 250k on his A6 and is trading his newer CC in for something different (not a new CC).

To compare apples to apples, here is a great article.......
It compares like model years.

http://www.fourtitude.com/news/publish/Features/article_183.shtml</a

Interesting, mostly I work on US and Asian vehicles...
yeah a lot of them are really going that way... Sucks... we need more mandated standards like obdII and CAN for the enhanced antd non emissions related features... Just the cost of maintaining the special tools, software and updates is ridiculous.... I think the days of general full service Indy's are really coming to an end because of this lack of standardization.... the public in general just does not understand the costs involved in keeping the subscriptions and equipment up to date

I would say the AWD system is hands down the biggest + for the AR
Its tried and true and when it comes to traction a liquid (viscous) connection is no match for a mechanical system (torsen)... also the allroad is always in all wheel drive mode and the XC doesn't start to work until after there is slippage..

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential6.htm</a

seems audiworld did a review back in the day
and yes i have experience with the two. my mom used to have a 2002 xc70 from new to 100,000miles.
She loved the car, it had enough power, but not excessive amounts. got her where she needed to go, no matter the weather(think CO winters). safe. lots of cargo(dog) room in the back. tan interior doesnt show dog fur as much as black.
however, it certainly is not as fast as the allroad. iirc, no option for manual transmission. no airbag suspension(take that comment however you like). at the time, no xenon headlights. "cheaper" feeling interior, though still nice. iirc, the last generation didnt come with black interiors(i may be wrong), and i like black interiors. haldex AWD -- not as good in bad weather as TorSen quattro, but results in better MPGs. I think she averaged around 25+ mpg mostly highway. road trips were 30+mpg.
i cant really say anything negative about the car, as it was really a pretty good all around car.

review
