UT to MD, 2300 miles, 23 mpg, wife averaged 78 mph, rocketbox on roof & 2 bikes..
01 6mt, GAIC flashed, ITG airfilter, evom DTV's,samco silcon turbo boost hoses, in lowest suspension the whole time on manual mode.
We did a trip from slc to big sandy wyoming, I80, average 105mph on the highway for 2 hours, 4 people, backpacks, x2 70 lbs dogs, rocketbox on roof. 24 mpg. Lots of fun, till we got to the trail head of hike(via bad dirt road) and torn a side wall. Never try to get a 17" tire(oem twinspokes) in the middle of BFE wyoming. $$$$

If this vicarious travel thing is going to work for me I need pics:) Glad you had good trips
and thanks for the info....btw getting anything in the middle of Wyoming even for a Chevy Silverado truck was no fun when we were through a couple of years ago...they drive Ford and Dodge big dually pickups and that's that

Yes an Audi is out of place in wyoming unless it is Jackson....
didn't take any pictures of my flat tire, should of though. Traveling in wyoming in an ar make for a comfy trip! Did the same trip multiple times in the ar our A4 and my old land rover discovery. The ar was the best for flying down dirt and paved roads. Well until you flat a tire, then not so fun.

We drive from SLC to here, spend the night, then backpack into the back country for a few days, then stay at the lodge, then drive home. Windrivers mountain in wyoming is some of the best hiking in the rocky mtns.
here is a link to pictures of the hikes. Note this is not me or my wife, but the pictures are the same area we hike and climb on. We have done multiple trips into this area and love it.

with 2 bikes I never get more than 18.3 mpg - what's up with that?
I drive at no more than 78 with the bikes on the roof and my mileage sucks - what you doing to get the higher mileage. I'm GIAC'd, S filter, and ride on setting 1 also because better aerodynamics.
the only dif I see is your hoses but that can't be that much diff. What am I doing wrong - I never get over 19.5 even without the bikes...

Re: with 2 bikes ... well...
One ..it is a 6spd so we use 6th alot and skip gears to get there.
Two .. Well it's the audi/vw turbo x-factor. We bought this car last fall. When we did we drove 6 other ar's. x1 tip, x5 6spds then we drove the one we bought. Very strong car, car felt like it already chipped before we bought it.(wasn't chipped till later by us) Some audi's seem to be stronger than others. The same was true of our A4 we owned too. So this car has been great and we tend to average 21mpg combined driving, 19mpg city, 24 to 26mpg hwy. My wife drives this car primarily and has a lead foot, so mileage can suffer. But she is a very smooth shifter and hits the gear swaps fast. Both of us tend to 'row' the shifter alor, so downshifting and upshifting for the right gear while keeping the rpm's in a good range.
Three .. our slc ut mechanics, streamline industries really did alot of driving and tuning of this car. They worked there magic to make it run this well.
I believe that my second point above is the biggest thing that plays into our mileage.
Of course I traded my 00 a4 avant for a 06 VW GLI right before this move. Driving with my wife and the allroad, I got 35mpg without any trouble, heavy loaded car no roof rack, GAIC chip, evom CAI, techtonics downpipe and exhaust, plugged noise pipe. The mileage was crazy compared to my 1.8t quattro a4. My work commute I get around 28mpg mixed driving.

Re: should add
thule ar/a6 avant specific rack w/ thule fairing and two yakima cobra mounts and for this trip a yakima rocket box.
For what ever reason thule's square bars seem to cut through the wind better than any yakima system I ever owned did. Less noisy then the same set up, but yakima bars and mounts and fairing, on my old a4 avant. Why? don't know..
