Default Best Brand/Viscosity Oil for AR

I am going to attempt to change my own oil. I was wonder what brand and viscosity people have best results with. I will choose between the audi speced oils that are fully synthetic. What brand do most people like. Is 5W-30 decent for the midwest? 5W-40? Thanks in advance.

German Castrol 0w-30 is popular around here. Get at Autozone. Must say 'European formula' on the front and 'Made in Germany' on the back. Amsoil Euro 5w-40 is also great oil. Mann filter is a must.

Default Not on the "list"

But, the Rotella T Syn 5w-40 is great oil. Blackstone reports support this in my 2004 2.7t ar.

I've also used Syntec and M1. My car uses/loses?? M1 @ a rate of 1/2 qt every 5k. This does not happen w/ the Shell or Castrol.

Don't know where the M1 goes but it does. I've used it twice with Rotella in between (no need to top off the Rotella)

Anyone else have a M1 issue?

If by M1 you are referring to Mobil 1 5w-30 then that stuff is junk. It shears out of grade in a couple thousand miles and turns to water. Tried it once in my 2.8 A4 and valve train was noisy. Changed to GC and everything went nice and quiet again. Mobil 0w-40 is supposed to be much better.

I picked up the euro castrol full synthetic. How do I know where the max level mark is (referring to the caution on my oil cap). How much is too much so as not to cause catalytic converter damage?

Should only take 7.3 qts w/filter. Hatched area on the dipstick is safe range. Touching the top plastic piece one the end of dipstick is absolute max.

I used the German Castrol Syntec 0W-30 last time, and will probably use it again as I am due for an oil change. I have a 4.2 and change it every 10k miles, and over that time period it does not use or lose any oil.
