Default Brake question

My 03 ar 6 speed has about 4K miles now. I have been noticing that the brakes "feel" wierd - like they have been exposed to water and have some oxidation on them. When I stop there is a bit of a scratchy feel and a slightly audible scratching/whirring sound. I always brake very lightly and carefully - have never had to jam them on. Is this feel/sound normal? Thanks.

Default Rotors get rusty

I've noticed when I wash my car that my rotors rust up / oxidize (whichever) pretty quickly. Driving the car after this happens I notice scratching and whirring until the brake pads have scraped off the rust / oxidation.

Default Re: Rotors get rusty

That is what I thought it was - rust - but it doesn't seem to want to scrape off. In fact, it feels better in the rain, but when it dries, I get that scratchy feel again. Anything that can be done?

Default I think that's normal with these brakes; it's probably...

...dirt and brake dust; doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Default I find mine mushy

The big difference between the Volvo 850 that I replaced and the new (to me) '99 A6 Avant is the brakes. My Volvo could stop on a dime and required very little pedal pressure. By comparison, the A6 brakes are mushy and weak.

I plan to do a complete brake fluid flush and replacement this weekend. After that comes the pad and rotor replacement. If that doesn't resolve it, I'm thinking upgrade.

Default Mine does this, too. It's pretty disconcerting and makes me question the power of the brakes.

Do all Audis do this?

IMHO, save a few $$$ and just do the brake upgrade...you'll be happier. I am.. 8^)

Default I would but...

I just can't imagine that even stock brakes would be this mushy. It must be a problem not just an inherent weakness in the brakes. So I'd like to sort it at low cost before going for the upgrade.

Default you're right, they shouldn't be that bad stock, the stock brakes are fine for normal street use.....

anyone who uses them hard will find they fade very quickly and the rotors will not last.
