Default Cargo box...

I let my brother borrow my AR a while back and in return for the favor, he bought me a cargo box (pictured). It rattles badly on the roads around Denver...I can't stand the noise. It is also so long that the rear hatch won't open all the way.

So, what does everyone use for cargo boxes on their allroads? What is the *best* (loaded question)? Ideally, I'd like something that can fit skis, boards, and/or gear inside, but doesn't rattle around on the roof. I'd also like something that won't take up more than half the bars, leaving room for 2+ bikes or a large set of ski racks.

Default This one is the BEST :P

Inno LowDown Cruiser

It holds 4 snow boards or 8 ski's, a carry-on size roller bag, mountain bike wheels; pretty much everything I have tried has fit... It's low and pretty quiet... No problem with the rear hatch opening, but it does bend the atteana back a bit.

Default I think mine is the Thule 1600

perfect size for the allroad, I only use it on vacations.

Default You need to move your rack all the way forward.

I use a Yakima Rocketbox, which is much bigger than your Spacebooster and it easily clears the hatch. I'll try to post a pic when I get home tommorow, I'm in Cheyenne tonight on a roadtrip with a FULL ar, including Rocketbox. I don't understand why yours is so noisy, we spent the last four days driving back and forth between the National Western complex and the Doubletree hotel on Quebec st with the box empty and had no rattles or squeeks. Are you sure everything is on tight? Maybe you should take it by the shop where he bought it and have them look at it.

Default True, to clear the hatch. But, I've noticed more wind noise when it is pushed forward.

I have mine all the way back...

Default True it is noisier than without, but...

anything you throw up there is going to be noisier than nothing, and I don't think you'll find anything significantly quieter. I still find the noise a pretty minimal trade off for the conveniece of the space, and it's really not that loud. Besides, I only run mine for trips, I don't leave it on all the time. Btw, if you have a roofbox, THAT is where your skis go! Not a "skirack". I was a ski tech for several years, believe me, you don't want mag-chloride and all the other winter roadgrime inside your bindings, not if you value your legs. Of course your skishop will tell you it's ok, but they're going to sell you new ones when these fail to function within spec.

Default Here's the Thule 1800

It fits but I had to buy a shorty antenna to fit under the back end. The bike rails go outbaord of the footpacks which you will see several of us have done. The 1800 will take two bike wheels plus my camping gear leaving the back end of the allroad for my furry copilot and the rear bench for my wife and the sprog.

Default Yes and no...

I don't run the box year round. When the box is not on, there's a mini-faring that helps cut wind noise. The bars are as far forward as possible without having the mini-faring resting on the sunroof.

All the quick release latches are tight. It is the box itself. The top and bottom pieces rattle against each other. They don't close tightly. There's no rubber gasket, etc to keep them from making noise against each other. It is just flimsy material on a cheapo box, IMO.
