Default Cold Start Problem/CEL Light on

2001 Allroad 2.7, Tiptronic. Had my timing belt and water pump replaced. The next day The first start of the day went like this: cranked over for 8 - 10 seconds then began sputtering to life. Ran very rough, no idle, first attempts at applying throttle led to sputtering. Eventually warmed up, went out and ran errands, CEL light came on. Started fine next few times that day, next morning same thing. Also, when in finally did start at first, I could definitely smell gas; the unburned, running rich variety. I will be taking it back to the repair shop that did the timing belt replacement to have them check it asap.

I have read a couple of threads that indicated similar cold start problems were possibly caused by a Coolant Temperature Sensor issue. My question, has anyone had this experience with the Cold Start, was it the CTS, and how does that work?

Same problem I had and coolant temp sensor was the fix. Until you get your sensor installed, floor the gas pedal while cranking the car. Your car will start and in a few seconds will operate normally.

BUT, scan the code and see if it isn't something different. Good luck!

Interesting advice. I thought you weren't supposed to apply the throttle when cranking a car with Fuel Injection? Granted, my information is old.

Took it to the shop today, definitely has a faulty CTS, also had an O2 sensor and one other fault code. New CTS going in tomorrow.

SOunds like maybe the timing belt is off a tooth. Is the shop you had the timing belt service reputable? Good luck.

Wouldn't that make the symptoms appear all the time, not just cold start? I did some research on the shop prior to going there. I didn't hear any horror stories; my experience has been good so far....

Glad to hear it was the CTS. $20 part can be a PITA for those that don't know too much about these cars.

Short story....I had a leak from back of engine near firewall when I first purchased my allroad. Took it to a local place because I didn't want to drive too far with a coolant leak. Local guys says he has to take apart the entire fuel intake, lines going to the heater core, etc to "figure out" where the leak is. Estimate was $700+ depending on what needs to be removed and replaced. 10 minutes searching here and I read it is most likely CTS. Left it leaking for a couple of days while the part came in and cold start problems surfaced. Apparantely, the coolant leaking from the CTS o-ring shorted the pins, which caused it to fail. swapped it in 10 minutes and the leak and cold start problems disappeared. I love this place. lol
