Don't take this out of context. If one were to get rid of the allroad
but still needed a wagon/SUV what would one buy. Caveat, car would have to be comfortable, good interior, somewhat sporty and a manual (possibly) and be around the $30K mark!
Thought about a GTI, but it's still a bit small, 1 baby in baby seat, 1 seat down and 2 medium sized dogs and stroller etc (won't work).
Jetta, passat no thank you.
subie, not the current breed, maybe the up coming new models?
Volvo, not the current wagon style, but again they are coming out with a new wagon
Tourag (sp), maybe but awfully price for a VW
Cayenne, even more so true (above statement)
Infiniti, if I wanted to go car tippin Seriously it's just wrong looking.
The allroad is a great car but if the woman wants something else, she wants something else.
S6 would be awfully dated with the new Audi body styles coming out and they are still over priced for being 2-3+ year old cars.
Te new Alfa is sharp but it's not like it would come to the US.
What am I overlooking?

Touareg... hand the price/brand bs
Ok, my brother-in-law just placed an order for a Touareg R5 (i.e. half the V10 TDi under the hood) and it drives very nicely, though of course without the punch that the ar has (its heavier than the ar, with a 5-in-line engine), but the standard of equipment is fantastic.
Who cares about the VW tag? The Touareg at first drive is a VERY VERY nice motorcar. Can't say about the reliability, but over her VW has a stirling rep on that front and TDi is incredibly reliable and robust.
Go for teh T-reg.

Saab 9-5 wagon -- stick, quick, moderately slick
or you could think about the 9-2. The saabaru
-- For under 30k you could get an A4 avant 1.8 and chip the bejeezus out of it.

Saw a really nice Jag wagon on Auto Spies couple months back
Based on the X-type. Recall it said Spring 04 launch date, but there was no mention of price. AWD. 6spd manual. Bigger than the A4 smaller than the A6. Looked nice. Thought it might be worth waiting to see in person before buying my allroad, but decided the allroad was the perfect car to begin with so why wait.

2005 Subaru may be an Audi A5: Audi A4+ or A6-
I wish that I still had my 1992 Subaru SVX and would seriously consider a 2005 Subaru as a less costly alternative to the allroad if I didn't want the adjustable air suspension.

X-type wagon should be coming - nice ride.
I drove my buddy's X-type sedan when in England last fall - very nice ride. V8 auto, definitely faster than my 2.7T ar, and better handling.
He's a design/engineering manager at Jag/Rover, and told me the wagon is coming. I would be very, very surprised if they didn't bring it to the US, given the wagon boom happening here.
