A friend of mine just made me realize something, 04 4.2 allroad vs 02 S6
For roughly $46k-$50K
Both cars are tips, both cars have the 4.2 liter (different 4.2's but 4.2's none the less).
The 04 allroad would be brand spanking new, ordered as one would like
The S6 would be 2 years old and have to take what someone traded for.
Why would I pay $46K for a used 2 year old S6 instead of a 04 4.2 allroad.. I don't think I would.
However I still do think the suspension and what I am looking for in a car the S6 does a better job out of the box.
Have they tweaked the suspension, brakes in the 04 4.2 model (anyone know) brakes same part numbers , suspensiona are they the same etc.etc.
With these new numbers, why would I even think about giving someone $45K or so for a 2 year old S6? That makes no sense in my book. Hmmm
sorry all for the outburst but I have been once again looking at getting into an S6, getting out of the S4 and allroad (thus the "S"6 and then getting a tuner car.
w0w, that is totally interesting, no way should the S6's be holding the prices that they are at with the new 04 allroads out!

There are a few things that you'll get for the difference
Particularly the slightly more tuned engine and higher (numerical) gearing. They contribute more to the feel, than the raw performance numbers, and are not something that you can duplicate easily for a few buck.
The suspension package, tires and wheels, sport seats and other interior details can more readily be duplicated but will reduce the "cash savings" on the allroad pretty quickly.
It all depends on what those things are worth to the individual. To some they represent a significant difference, to others minimal. The Allroad 4.2 is a great value, and undoubtedly a part of the reason for the S6 being retired from the line.
