Default getting off the front axle bolt (17mm hex) so I can get to

the CV boots. Any thoughts on getting this bolt off. Tried air tools, a breaker bar (8ft) it just snapped the extension in half.

Default I use my Snap On 3/4 inch drive with Vanadium 4 ft handle. It worked on endlink connectors

and centerguide bolts on my M1A1. Never fails to move the C/V bolt on a VAG product.

Default gotta say...

there's nothing like quality (read professional) tools to get a job done. There IS a reason they cost more. Btw, try to NOT use an extension whenever possible, it just wastes some of the torque you are trying to apply to the fastener by twisting, which you apparently found out the hard way.

Default What are you some weirdo with ex military gear? Also, use penetrating fluid... NOT WD40!

x2 on good tools. Also, use real penetrating fluid on fasteners (especially if you think it's corrosion and also not threadlocked) giving you problems. WD 40 is a lubricant - you need something like Nuts Off, Liquid Wrench, or the best, IMO - PB Blaster. On really stuck or problem fasteners, hit them with the fluid well in advance and let it soak. Also, you can lightly tap siezed fasteners with a hammer, which helps break them loose. I don't know if AW has a cult of the anti WD 40 yet, so pardon me if this is already a tired topic. It's just that I'm consistently blown away by people in this day and age who believe that the trick is just a little WD40.

Oh yeah, I'm a big dude - and my air gun only puts out about 400 ft-lbs of breaking force. With a 2 ft breaker bar, I can easily grunt out 500-600 ft lbs, and sometimes more, depending on position. Use a 6 point (not a 12 point) socket, a breaker bar, maybe a cheater bar, put on your glasses and your gloves, and go for it. A big pull and you can easily pop the head off a 19mm-size fastener.

Finally, remember - your torque wrench, despite its long handle, is not to be used as a breaker bar.

and x2 on military gear.

Default Re: getting off the front axle bolt (17mm hex) so I can get to

I used a 1/2" drive Craftsman 14" breaker bar, a cut off 17MM allen wrench combined with a 17MM impact socket and for leverage a 5' black iron pipe.

You have the right idea with the breaker bar. You just need stronger tools.

Default X3 on the ex military gear. British army cold war is my thing.

The wife won't let me buy armour or tracked vehicles and I can't convince her that I need an amphibious Alvis Stalwart in Phoenix so I make do with this as my daily driver.

Not quite a deuce or an M1, but on a day when I feel brave or stupid I can haul 1.5 tonnes at 80mph on the freeway. It's also ideal for hauling downhill bikes and riders on shuttles in the White Mountains in AZ.

Cheers

Default I just did mine over the memorial day weekend...

I actually didn't have the correct allen wrench but I had one that was close. I just used the allen wrench with a metal pipe and bingo, came right off. I did happen to notice, however, that the threads were coated with anti-siege. So I'm thinking it was removed once before.
