A common question...
Mobil1 0w40 & Castrol Syntec 0w30 (heavy for a 30-wt) are among the best. Both are available at AutoZone in the USA and are rated ACEA A3, BMW LL-01, & VW 502.00. I prefer the Syntec 0w30, commonly referred to as German Castrol (GC) in my 2.7t.

Confision abounds...
Even the techs Indys you talk to varry with this. M1 10W-30, Castrol 0W-40 or 5W-50. As long as you meet eh VW Spec.. you are good to go. And as long as you change every 5k +/-

Amsoil 5w-40 European Formula
Just switched my '01 BMW 330Ci convertible (4k miles) to it and I'm going to switch our new (to us) '01 S6 (18k miles) over to it.
It's more expensive than the M1 but the per mile charge is nothing.
