Got APRed for my birthday. I thought I would share many thoughts on this instilation (long)
1. I was going to go with GIAC because my tip chip from them worked great and I really like the Tuner who did it. GIAC only had a socket/chip version for the AR not the IBE to switch programs.
2. APR had my ECU number only after it got flashed and changed during a dealer recall. It went from 551R to 551S. Thanks again to Paulroad who made me aware of this change, I owe you a beer if you ever drive out to Oregon. The 551S is a 2004 program for the ECU and APR had it but not in the Allroad section of their web site but the A6 2.7 section. I called APR and they said it did not matter AR/A6 2.7t. Same Engine and program in both.
3. Went up to Portland last Friday to an APR rep for my chip. Nice shop and installer. Showed me everything he was doing at all times. See pics below.
4. He has done about 40 chips and about 100 DPI, which is not available for the 2.7t yet. This was his first 2003!
5. The problem (just want to make you all aware of this)!!! He removed the OEM chip and cleaned the ECU. When he put the new chip in there were now 48 pads on the ECU but both the OEM and APR chip only had 44 pins!!!! Holy **** he says as the sweat starts to form over our heads! He put the chip in so that 4 pads are empty at one side. He thinks this is right. Turned the key and it is dead! Plug chip in to his computer and it says it is fried. He has never seen a fried chip and thinks that maybe the location of the chip could be wrong. It is Friday PM and APR is closed for consultation. He calls a friend who works at APR who is home from work and he tells him that the chip on the 2003 need to be in the middle with 2 empty pads on either side of the chip! A new chip is put in the right way and no problems!!! Holly **** and that was his last chip with more coming next week.
6. I got the stock and 91 octane program. We only have 92 octane in Oregon!
7. It is sweet to be able to switch back and forth to see the difference and there is a big difference. Nice smooth transition of power. What a great wagon! Best part is you can't even tell it has been chipped unless you hit the gas then you know right away. I leave it on all the time since my wife can't even tell. She never hits it and that is fine with her! Cool!
Here is the install!
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/41143/dsc06019.jpg">
Plastic cover removed, ECU box exposed.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/41143/dsc06023.jpg">
Chastity belt. Rotary drill needed to cut grooves into 2 screws then remove with a screwdriver.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/41143/dsc06026.jpg">
ECU open, chip with the bar code is the OEM.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/41143/dsc06028.jpg">
APR chip docked to the computer and downloading the proper software and programs
IMO
I would not do this without a tip chip first. The transmission really handles this increased power much better. I am really glad I did the H-sports. The car would be undriveable with the increased power and stock sways!
Ciao

Congrads.. if I'm ever in Oregon.. I'll take you up.... Caution with the switching though..
IF you change programs with the engine running, you will accumulate fault codes: "Engine Missfires" in your ECU... nothing that is harmfull, the code is caused by the miniscule time it takes for the programs to change.
You need to clear the codes when you go back to the dealer, becaus if they VAG and see the codes.. they may investigate. I have a VAG and always switch to stock and clrear the codes about a hour b4 I get to the dealer.
Have fun with your reborn ar...
