Level 3 - Operative Height?
This is from the 2001 spec sheet. Do they mean that llevel 3 is the intended "normal" level?
Height (unloaded): 60.1 in. - Level 1 (@ speed > 80 mph)
61.1 in. - Level 2 (@ speed > 50 mph)
62.0 in. - Level 3 (operative height)
62.7 in. - Level 4 (offroad)
Ground Clearance: 5.6 in. - Level 1 (@ speed > 80 mph)
6.6 in. - Level 2 (@ speed > 50 mph)
7.6 in. - Level 3 (operative height)
8.2 in. - Level 4 (offroad)

Re: Level 3 - Operative Height?
I started with level 3 but got tired of the constant changing with stop lights. Also if you use level 3 in snow and than move to higher speeds there may be ice in the wheel wells that the tires rub against in level 2.

I think...
that Audi thought that would be the ticket when they launched the vehicle for 2001 ("drive low, park high" as some have quoted). But once the vehicles were in drivers' hands they found that the suspension height adjustment was just too danged slow to have it changing level all the time. That's why in 2002 and later they changed the user controls.

You're right
Sometimes, I've tried setting L3 and driving around, but with traffic lights and 50mph driving the car constantly adjusts. Turn a corner and it starts rising, hit speed and lowers, till you stop then rises to...
It's fun hitting the highway in L3, then making it drop to L1 by speed alone. It's fun slowing by the off ramp and punching up L3 for the potholed parking lot.
Around here L1 is dangerously low - the car bottoms out on railroad tracks and crappy roads. L2 is just right mostly. L3 is for snow, or really crappy roads, or just to make the car look like the other off road posers in the parking lot. It's a poser, but the allroad can hang in most off road environs better than the vehicles that ride 100% of the time in what I'd guess is L 2.5 or 3. Acura MDX comes to mind, Nissan, Mercedes, Toyotas and such.
