Liquid inside rear view mirror - Double images - Need more info
I then noticed the next time I drove at night all the cars headlights were doubled. During the day I saw what appears to be liquid inside.
So:
1. Does this happen randomly or did the guys at the shop whack it?
2. What is the replacement part and best place to source one (aftermarket ok)?
3. Is there a newer, better upgrade with compass or ?
Thank you!
I really like the shop and the guys that work there are really nice. I haven't sourced the replacement part yet or how to replace it.
I want to have as much information as possible before I go there and accuse them of breaking my mirror and asking them to help pay for the replacement.
Thanks.
Part 4B0 857 511 01C
Price $434 plus installation of about $75-80
I just can't believe this! Please tell me there is another option out there. I thought it would be bad if it were around $200. Heck I only paid $350 for the tint job. He is really going to lose out on this one or I am going to have a really tough battle.
you could check ebay and a couple of the audi part sites that are out there
the mirrors seem to break down if they are exposed to a lot of concentrated heat, ie closed up car in a 100 degree day = 150+/- inside the car
could have been ready to fail already, they bumped and finished it
if i remember, ill call up my audi parts guy for a quote, he gives me a nice break on stuff.
If not were you doing it anyway?
If not what makes you think it was the tinter's fault; just because it was there when it failed?
Be very careful when you accuse someone, that you can prove the accusation is true. Otherwise all you've done is unnecessarily make an enemy. No one needs extra enemies. He may talk to another indy in your area and you'll be left with only the dealer to service your car; big bucks, always.
Just a thought.

That's exactly why I am here and posted to get some more info. I just purchased the car a couple weeks ago. There were no problems when I dropped it off to get tinted. After I picked up the car I did notice that the rear view mirror was totally moved. The left side was almost touching the windshield. I wish I had noticed the liquid in the mirror right then, but I was really just looking at how good it looked tinted.
Now that I have found this issue I am trying my best to find out if it happens randomly or if it was indeed caused by someone accidentally hitting the mirror against the windshield.
I am also trying to find out what can be done for a reasonable cost. The replacement from the dealership is insane and I can't even imagine asking for that kind of reimbursement.
If it wasn't such a big deal and safety issue I would let it go. If it was not an expensive repair I would probably just take care of it myself as he gave me $100 discount.
