Hi:

I've been lurking here for a while. Just replaced my 1988 VW winter beater, with a 2002 Allroad.

Paid 22k, seems like it has all the options but navigation. It is gray and has 45k miles.

Hopefully, it holds together, but I don't think it will be as easy for me to work on as either my e36 M3 or e39 540.

First mod will be some 16 "Michelin Alpins with AT S5 rims, unless some has a better Winter solution for around 1k.

For navigation I use a Garmin ique 3600 PDA ($500). Gives voice and visual directions.

Transfers from car to car, I've used it walking and cycling. I also have European maps so I can use it on vacation. Also it is nice to do all your restaurant and route research from the comfort of your couch and hotel room rather than in the car.

I've even used in planes.

So use the twin spokes for Winter tyres and get some 18's for the Summer?

Twins are notorious for packing with snow. I'd recommend dedicated 16" winter wheels.

Default I second TroyH. I loved mine in the winter on 16's. Get the right

offset, don't run spacers unless you have too. The allroad is very picky about balance. Have fun, great car.

Default Congrats on the new AR

I also have just purchased my first AR on Christmas Eve. On Christmas day I ordered 17" Dunlop DS2's for my stock 5 spoke wheels (single spoke)from Tirerack. I have run these tires on A Jetta for a season & liked them real well. I'm more interested in ice than I am snow. Ice seems to show up unexpected. Snow - I can stay home, at work, etc. These cost $500 including shipping and mounting balance etc. Come Spring I hope to add 19" RS4's & tires.
