Newb looking to buy an allroad 4.2......
Greetings,
I am sure it has been covered before I am thinking of jumping into a 2004 Allroad 4.2.
Forgot to add that the car is Tiptronic Auto 5 speed.
Any major caveats, what should I be looking for mechanically before I bite the bullet?

My caveats in a brief list
- have an Audi-savy independent shop go over the car
- don't think CPO is as good as a warranty from the mfg...you may be better off money-wise with a good after market extended warranty...call out to mustbeaudi if you want more info or search on extended warranty in the archives
-realize this is not a Honda or a Toyota with all the attendant good/bad that entails...even the 4.2, although more bullet proof than the 2.7T in general is a high performance machine with almost every known bell and whistle on it known to design at the time of build for a car....oh and lastly don't fall in the love with the car without first checking all of this out or you'll buy it anyway and then you can join us in complaining about the car we love

service history and a car fax would be a requirement for me.
I just bought my first ever extended warranty as all the delightful goodies could get expensive.
Should be a nice car if you know what you're getting.
How much would Audi charge for an extended?

Enjoy,
Cheers,

As mentioned 4.2 has different brakes, vented rotors in rear and larger fronts, but still has rotor and pad wear problems and pulsing. Our rear pads wore before the fronts, although there are only sensors on the front. After complaining to Audi US, a potential $700-$800 repair was covered under warranty. Pulsing (warped?) front rotors were replace at our last service under warranty.
