Default to panic or not...extended warranties...

i'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum, but here goes for us ar newbies....
Since my episode with the suspension failure at 1100 miles this week, I've been thinking about an extended warranty. I did a search here, and found a coupla companies mentioned. I went to carexam.com, filled out the form for the ar and got a quote of about $1400 for 5yr/100k with a $50 deductible...and it's pretty much bumper to bumper. Then I called them for a quote and told them that the ar had 30k miles (instead of 1100) -- just to se what the price difference was. The answer is NONE! So my question is why would someone buy an extended warranty from them for a new car instead of waiting a year or 2 (or more). Maybe they step the rates according to model year and not mileage. I just can't see spending any amount of money to get a warranty the will run concurrently for most of the factory warranty. I'll probably get screwed when I call in a year or 2 to purchase the warranty and it's doubled in price!!

Default I would wait until closer to the end of the factory warranty...

If you didn't buy it when the car was new (when you get the best discount), then I see no reason to spend the money on an extended warranty until you really need it IMHO...if you have the money now, invest safely and buy it later. Personally I want as much of my 4 or 5 years of coverage as possible to be available outside of the factory warranty, so in my mind it's worth any eventual price increase.

I'm interested in Warranty Gold, because they are one of the few "recommended" internet sites that will cover the allroad's twin turbos. And the kicker is that they offer a 5yr/150,000 warranty. Current price is $3625, but they usually always have a 'special' going where they give you a $500 discount, so seems like $3125 is reasonable for a full 100,000 miles past the factory warranty (this price was quoted for a car with 45000 miles). That pricing is pretty much in line with your quote...a little more, but I'd expect that considering the risk of more repairs in the 100-150k portion of the warranty.

I read some negative talk about Warranty Gold a year or two ago, but they have since changed their insurance companies. Insurer is A-, and reinsurer is now A+. They also have an even more comprehensive plan, but they don't give that price on their website.

Anyone have any experience with this company??

Default Re: I would wait until closer to the end of the factory warranty...

Just checked out the warrantygold site. It's actually a bit less expensive than your numbers. I agree...waiting seems like the way to go. It'll probably take me around 30 months to reach 45k miles, so I'll revisit the situation late in 2004 -- if all goes well :=)
