Default Questions about cross bars and bike carriers for roof rack.

I have a new-to-me 2002 allroad and a 2003 TT. I already have the OEM roof rack for the TT along with two OEM fork mount bike carriers and two ski carriers. If possible, I'd prefer to not purchase all new bike carriers/ski carriers for the allroad.

My questions are:

1. Do the Audi allroad OEM cross bars support the Audi TT OEM bike carriers/ski carriers t-bolt/slot mounting system?

2. Do any aftermarket cross bars support the OEM bike carriers/ski carriers t-bolt/slot mounting system?

3. If no to both of the above, what other roof rack systems would be recommendeed? (ie: Thule, Yakima, etc.)

TIA!

1. Yes
2. Yes. The first that comes to mind is the Thule "Aero" bars, which have a T-slot in them.

I have the European "Aero" 861 bars and 755 feet (if I remember the model numbers correctly). Supposedly (search is your friend) there are some newer Aero-type bars with different part numbers now available in the US, according to recent threads on here.

I had the OEM bars before, but traded them from the Thule Aeros. Extremely happy with them; have a set for both my ar and my S4 Avant.

There are at least one or more other bars (lesser known names) out there that support T-bolts, but I'm not sure if they will work with the OEM attachments. I had looked at two of them, but decided on the Thule for both lower cost and availability of parts. So far, all of my OEM attachments work fine on my bars.

Default Very helpful. Thanks!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. A search indicates that the best set-up is a Thule 755+861 combo, but it may be hard to find since they are not available in the US. Ebay hunting I will go.

If you want to stay close to OEM, as scfan said, Thule products are a good match.

The 755+<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Thule-861-Aluminim-Aero-Bars-120cm-for-Rapid-Foot-Packs_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33651QQihZ019QQit emZ8062622503QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V">861</a> combo is not easy to find even on eBay. I harvested the foot pack (755) from the NA <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/THULE-Rapid-Railing-roof-rack-54-in_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33651QQihZ019QQitemZ 8069350267QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW">75Xxt</a> (751xt is the exact matching bar size but 754xt and 756xt will give you the same footpack) set they sold a couple of years ago. Then I ordered the 861s from the UK.

I liked the 755+861 combo better than the now available RB47 (bars) and 450R (footpack). These are referred to as 775 outside the NA.

Good luck!

Default I bought them in the US a few years ago

Supposedly, Thule offered them here for a year or two a few years ago...but possibly only to certain vendors. At least that was the story I was given.

I bought them from Sports Rack, now called Rack N Road (see link below). They couldn't order them anymore, but they had quite a few in stock. My local store ended up getting them from inventory from a Southern California store.

Also got the 15% discount they advertise on their website by going to the local store. They ended up costing less than my OEM bars and they are significantly beefier, while having better feet attachment. My concern was using the OEM bars with my Evolution 1600 box; it was a bit flimsy.

Giblet is correct; the bar set is the 861.

Good luck!<ul><li><a href="http://www.racknroad.com/">Rack N Road</a></li></ul>
