Just change the automatic transmission fluid. Especially if the car has more than 60,000 miles. The old stuff will look like a combination of baby vomit and diarrhea, and that can't be good in anyones book. Slam in a new filter and 7 liters of new fluid and the car will shift like butter, will be smoother, and will pick up 3 mpg.

Try it and see!

I did this in my B5, and saw similar results. I can only imagine it is somewhat simple like in the B5, but haven't looked into it yet. I put in Redline tranmission fluid, made a huge shifting difference.

Just had the fluid changed at 95000 on my '02 allroad--dramatic difference in smoothness of shifting. Not sure yet about mpg--and won't be able to be since dealer also put on K04's, miltek downpipes to MTM catback exhaust. But it sure does run smoother. They didn't change the filter for some reason--I think it was that Audi didn't require until 150K, or so they thought.
