so, unexpectedly, I hate the 3 b7 a4 2.0t loaners I've had in the last 2 weeks
my boxster has been in for warranty work and a little mistake, the dealership has been great and has taken care of that, but I've had 4 different loaner cars in the past month
1st was a 2006 a4 2.0t tip, I hated it, the transmission was so damned obnoxious that I brought it back that day
2nd, a 2007 a4 2.0 tip with 100 miles on it, this one the tranny was better, but I still didn't like it
3rd, a 2007 C280 4Matic (Merc) this car was within a few thousand of the A4 and was worlds better, I had no idea there was such a big difference between the cars, I actually like this car even though it was small for a sedan
4th, 2007 a4 2.0 tip, yeah, now I hate it even more, the seating area is cramped, my knees rub worse than any car I remember, not just my right knee on the console, but my left knee on the door, the seats are HORRIBLE no side bolster to speak of, squishy, nonsupporting crap, and the interior is busier and more intrusive with the damned bright aluminum
this makes me sad, I owned a 2001 A4 1.8t stick, sport seats, sport suspension, celebration package and it was a great car, I mean great, the new one seems like a step in the wrong direction and I don't like it

Keep in mind...that dealers in the Audi Loaner program have to order loaners with...
a very specific list of equipment. My dealer todl me that if they wanted an A8 in the pool they had to get it without heated seats.
The A4 is also a specific list. While this doesn't effect the tranny, it would effect the alum molding and the seats.

I had a B7 A4 2.0 tip loaner for my S4 Avant
Talk about shock going from one car to the other. Felt like a totally different car in nearly every respect. The four banger is so much noisier and buzzy, little torque down low, and the tip behind it does nothing to help. Only once you get it buzzing did move with any enthusiasm. My S4 is a stick, but still, the tip behind my allroad 4.2 is worlds better. Maybe the 2.0T just doesn't have the torque to adequately overcome what the tip lacks...or it is just a poor tip design.
Not that I expect a near base level A4 to compare apples-to-apples to a S4, but the A4 2.0T was definitely something I wouldn't buy (no offense to those that have). I'm much more impressed, from a driving standpoint, with BMW's 3 series base car.

Yes, that is actually what I read into it. Definitely sad to see quality drop, it
makes our allroad harder to replace. I have been considering an A4/S4 as a replacement for my aging '91 GLI. Always a new decision.

Audi offers a option package for loaners -- a scaled down inexp verion of the car
I think if you check out the window sticker it says "loaner equipment package". they are not base a4's, they are something less than the base model. (yuck)
